What are the eligibility requirements for Global Medical Care?

Eligibility for a Global Medical Care (GMC) plan at the time of application typically includes the following criteria:

  • Residency: You must be a resident of Canada.
  • Healthcare Coverage: You must have existing provincial or territorial health coverage in place, as GMC plans often act as a complement to your primary healthcare insurance.
  • Age: There are often age restrictions for eligibility. For example; you must be at least eighteen (18) years of age, except for eligible dependents, and under the age of 71 at time of application.
  • Medical Underwriting: Eligibility will be subject to medical underwriting, which may involve disclosing your medical history to assess any pre-existing conditions that could affect coverage.
  • Dependents: Coverage may extend to include your spouse and dependent children, with specific definitions and conditions, such as age limits or student status.
  • Waiting Periods: There may be waiting periods for those who have recently become residents of the country or for certain benefits (e.g. Maternity benefits) to become available under the plan.
